When we think "a film about Bitcoin", a dry lecture full of charts often comes to mind. Yet over the past few years a distinct strand of cinema has grown up around Bitcoin — with festival-awarded documentaries, comedies, thrillers and animation. At Bitcoin FilmFest we watch dozens of such titles a year. Below is a selection of the ones genuinely worth starting with.
📚 What exactly is "Bitcoin cinema"?
It's a broader category than it seems. It spans four layers: films directly about Bitcoin (documentaries on Satoshi, inflation, self-custody, adoption); films in which Bitcoin is part of the plot (comedy, thriller, drama); films aligned with the Bitcoin ethos that never mention it but speak of freedom and stepping out of the system (like The Matrix or The Truman Show); and cinema financed or distributed via Bitcoin. The festival doesn't impose this category from the top down — it discovers it and helps it mature.
🎬 Documentaries: where to start
Dirty Coin — winner of the Golden Rabbit for Best Film at BFF'24. A solid introduction to energy and mining, dismantling popular myths about "wasting electricity".
No More Inflation — Best Film at BFF'25. A direct, powerful take on a subject Poles understand all too well: why money loses value and what Bitcoin has to do with it.
Hummingbird — The Bitcoin Jungle Story — a documentary about a grassroots circular economy on Costa Rica's coast, where everyday payments run over Lightning. Premiered at BFF'26 in person by its creator, who flew in from Central America.
From El Salvador to Global Mission — the path from the fishing village of El Zonte, which inspired Bitcoin adoption in El Salvador, to a global wave of local communities.
Bitcoin: Digital Gold — the finale of Torsten Hoffmann's Bitcoin trilogy, framing Bitcoin as the natural successor to gold. A good pick for the investment-minded.
😂 Fiction and comedy: Bitcoin as a supporting character
Bitcoin Castle — the double winner of BFF'26 (jury and audience). A German dark comedy about a prepper with 42 BTC counting down to a crisis in a French château. The funniest film of the latest edition.
Self Custody — an American thriller about a father who discovers that a 2014 Bitcoin bonus is now worth millions — but he has to recall the password to his wallet. It had its European premiere at BFF'26.
Crypto Castle — a satirical comedy about a hacker house in 2015 San Francisco, based on the author's real experiences of early Bitcoin culture.
🎨 Shorts and animation: great to begin with
MaxisClub — a family animated series, winner of the Golden Rabbit for Best Short at BFF'26. Kids face down the "inflation monster" and learn self-custody.
Satoshi, the Creation of Bitcoin — Best Short at BFF'25, by Artur Machado. An elegant, accessible telling of the network's birth.
Coined in Watercolor — an intimate, emotional portrait of the spirit of the Bitcoin community, with music and watercolors instead of charts.
🕵️ For the curious: the Satoshi mystery
Finding Satoshi — the result of a years-long journalistic investigation into the identity of Bitcoin's creator, featuring well-known figures from the tech world. Searching for Satoshi (Best Story Golden Rabbit at BFF'24) and Hotel Bitcoin (Best Story at BFF'25) are further titles worth adding to the list.
📺 Where to watch?
Some titles have publicly available trailers on the creators' channels, and films by Torsten Hoffmann or the El Salvador documentaries can be found on popular platforms. The broadest catalogue of Bitcoin cinema, though — more than 20 titles from the current and past editions — we make available via the IndeeHub platform to festival ticket holders. It's one of the reasons it's worth showing up at BFF in person: a ticket is not just four days in the cinema, but access to the library long after the festival.
