It's easy to picture "a film about Bitcoin" as a lecture with charts. In fact the best titles in this strand are simply good cinema: crime mysteries, dark comedies, documentaries you watch on the edge of your seat. Here are five that, according to Bitcoin FilmFest's founder, are worth knowing.
1. The Mystery of Satoshi
A French film about who is behind Satoshi Nakamoto. It blends animation with documentary footage in a very interesting, motivating form. A great starting point if you want to feel why the question of Bitcoin's creator still electrifies the world.
2. HodL
A festival favorite and winner of the Best Short award in 2024. It runs barely three minutes, yet is both engaging and educational. It's one of those titles that practically begs to be developed into a feature one day.
3. Bitcoin Castle
This year's Best Movie winner. A thirty-minute dark comedy shot on a small budget — which you'd never guess. It's deeply authentic, and its characters are easy to identify with and root for. Proof that a low budget is no obstacle to good cinema.
4. Hotel Bitcoin
A very funny, underrated comedy that isn't really about Bitcoin. Here Bitcoin is an element of an entertaining crime comedy — which is exactly why this title shows so well that a "Bitcoin film" isn't only a film about Bitcoin. Sometimes it's simply a great story in which Bitcoin plays a part.
5. Searching for Satoshi
A Canadian investigative documentary about the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto — and a fairly convincing one. It's rare to have so much fun with a documentary. If you like journalistic investigations, this one will pull you in from the first minutes.

Most of the films shown at Bitcoin FilmFest are publicly available online — many are two searches away. Some titles, though, we make available only via the IndeeHub platform to ticket holders, and a few can be seen only in the cinema, at the festival itself. That's why it's worth buying a ticket even if you can't make it to Warsaw in person — it gives access to titles from every past edition.
