Her latest production, DIRTY COIN including its shorter version, STRANDED which has already garnered numerous awards, makes an eye-opening production to shed light on the underrepresented and underappreciated facets of Bitcoin mining.

🎙️ BFF: In your opinion, what are some of the most common misconceptions people have about Bitcoin mining and its impact on the environment?

💬 Alana: Many people hold misconceptions about Bitcoin based on what is commonly repeated in the media. Nobody is ever thinking about the energy consumption of the industries they interact with every single day. This is not a common figure that people know about things, yet when it comes to Bitcoin, it sure is ‘dirty’ because of all that energy consumption! People know that datum, out of context, about Bitcoin.

🎙️  BFF: STRANDED explores the concept of harnessing stranded electricity for Bitcoin mining. What were the most intriguing aspects of this idea that you wanted to capture in your film?

💬 Alana: As a person that was born and raised in an electrified country, I always took my access to electricity for granted. The concept of how a grid grows through demand was not something I ever thought about. I actually wanted to capture that it is a great privilege to have access to electricity, and that mining is able to finance new grid infrastructure in places that have never had it before – completely changing lives.

🎙️ BFF: Given that STRANDED is a precursor to DIRTY COIN, what could people who absolutely loved STRANDED and are interested in understanding the real socio-economic impact of Bitcoin mining expect to see more of in DIRTY COIN?

💬 Alana: DIRTY COIN starts at the beginning of it all and moves quickly to what the industry looks like today. It dives into more of the conflicts that have led bitcoin to its dirty reputation. I would say that “Dirty Coin” might surprise some people.

🎙️ BFF: Filming in unique locations can come with its set of challenges. Could you tell us about any remarkable experiences or obstacles you encountered while making STRANDED?

💬 Alana: Obstacles for the whole film have definitely been centered around its funding. Thank goodness I have the experience and chip on my shoulder that I have because I think most people would have given up, and I was able to make the film look expensive on a negative budget. I have my eye on the goal at the end and see it clearly, but it was a letdown to see so few people actually chip in while paying in bitcoin for their private flights to conferences.

🎙️ BFF: Are there any upcoming projects or areas of interest you plan to explore, especially in the intersection of technology, environmental concerns, and filmmaking?

💬 Alana: Energy. I am all in. The next one is about what it will take us to reach a type 1 civilization using Puerto Rico as our underdog model that is undergoing major infrastructure change. It’s a pivotal moment in the island’s history and it can serve as an example of failing grids around the world.

🎙️ BFF: As a filmmaker, how has Bitcoin influenced your work? Are there specific aspects of it that you find particularly inspiring or compelling from a storytelling perspective?

💬 Alana: I’m building my new production company, Campo Libre, to not be a film 3 company but a company with the values of bitcoin such as immutability, property, peer-to-peer transfer of value without middlemen and more soon.

I see many pathetic attempts to “disrupt” the film industry with new token projects when we already have the tech we need to build something monumental – bitcoin. One is forever changed after understanding bitcoin and I look forward to continuing my education in the subject, which has for sure been mining and energy heavy for the past two years.
